Remastersys LXDE Lite

A Debian Lenny based distribution for older computers

What is Remastersys LXDE Lite?

It is a Debian Lenny based distribution meant for older computers or those wanting to get the most from their PC's.

How did it come to be?

I was a very long time KDE user.  I used KDE since 1.0 was first released and I had to compile both kde and the qt libraries on my slackware install.  With the release of KDE4 I lost interest in the desktop as it was getting too flashy for me and had a lot of features I don't use anyway so I started looking for alternative desktop environments since I also wasn't a big fan of Gnome.  I came across this great little desktop environment that was in fact a collection of existing tools put together along with some new apps they created themselves called LXDE.

LXDE just seemed to suit my needs better these days and I have a lot of older PC's around the house that I use for different things.  I also recycle PC's for friends and family and having a lightweight desktop with modern applications and functions makes these dinosaurs come to life so to speak.

I've put the most amount of time in developing the remastersys tool for both debian and ubuntu along with my remastersys lxde control panel.    The remastersys tool is what I used to make the livecd after customizing a debian lenny netinst install.  The remastersys lxde control panel is the main tool that unifies all the other tools installed along with some that I created myself to make common tasks a little easier to find and accomplish.  It's a kind of one-stop shop so to speak.  No need to go searching through the menu trying to figure out what tool to use for what task.  It's all there in what I believe to be an organized and logical layout with everyday english names for the tasks.

Remastersys LXDE Lite is only for the English language due my limited amount of time.  I use it at home and just like the remastersys tool I decided to share it with others in case they too find it useful.

Story behind the logo

The logo was actually created by my youngest son in his kindergarden class.  As soon as he showed me what he had done at school, I knew I had found my logo.  I scanned in his wonderful piece of art and decided to use it as the logo for remastersys lxde lite.  The logo was used for the menu launcher icon as well.

Please do not ask me to change the logo.  There is nothing that could hold a more dear place in my heart than this wonderful penguin created by my youngest son.  He was so excited when I told him I was going to use it for the logo of this distribution and there is no way I would ever change it.

It may not be the prettiest logo but it is the best logo for remastersys lxde lite!

I hope you enjoy using Remastersys LXDE Lite as much as I enjoyed creating it.
